MISSY HIGGINS: THE MELODIST

Age: 21

From: Australia

The Music: It takes just one listen to Missy Higgins debut album to make it immediately clear that it is her music that is front and centre and everything else comes second. The album, titled The Sound Of White, is a stripped down, straight-from-the-heart offering that showcases both her startlingly mature writing and her incredibly striking voice. It is no wonder that it debuted at number 1 and is already certified five times platinum. The album opens with the song All For Believing, one of the first songs Missy ever wrote, and weaves its way through twelve other pieces. Piano ballads and acoustic guitar driven songs, fit just right with uptempo pieces to balance the mood. Her distinct Australian phrasing lends uniqueness to an already strong voice and her lyrics perfectly reflect the travelling Missy has done over recent years.

FYI: Missy spent her teen years singing in her brother’s jazz band and playing the guitar and piano. But it all began for her when her sister entered one of Missy’s songs into a demo competition. She won the contest and her song All For Believing quickly became one of the most requested tracks on radio.
It would have been the easiest thing for her to then capitalize on this national exposure by quickly releasing a CD. However, she wanted more time to grow as a songwriter and performer so she chose to spend the following year backpacking across Europe and writing more music. In 2003 she released a critically acclaimed, self titled EP that spent nine months around the top of the charts. The lead track from that EP, Greed For Your Love, was written during her European trek shortly before she lost her guitar on a train in Spain. It had now become one of the Hottest 100 songs of the year.
