All About: These New York City musicians sure have made it to a lot of lists –
at this year’s Grammy Awards they’re up for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group; Entertainment Weekly named them one of 2003's "Breakout Artists" and in 2002 they made the "It List: The 100 Most Creative People In Entertainment". As if that’s not enough, their latest ‘Welcome Interstate Managers’ was declared one of the year's 50 Best Albums by Rolling Stone, and MOJO Magazine included Fountains Of Wayne in their recent book, The Greatest Albums Of All Time, calling the band "almost better than anything, ever." What’s the buzz all about? It all started with their first two albums, ‘Fountains Of Wayne’ and ‘Utopia Parkway’. With their impossibly catchy, witty tunes, they earned a reputation as masters of the three-and-a-half minute pop song.
Led by songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood, the New York-based quartet is known for crafting instantly memorable character portraits. They tackle such varied subjects as love, work, frustrated commuters, drunken salesmen, retired airline pilots, pressured quarterbacks, bad waitresses, vegan entrepreneurs, clip-on ties, exploding cell phones, lawn mowing, and even vacations without the kids.
Musically, the new album finds the group (which also includes guitarist Jody Porter and drummer Brian Young) bringing a wide variety of tunes. Power pop meets acoustic, with some guitar rock, hints of 60's psychedelia and even a country song thrown in. Collingwood and Schlesinger say they began playing music together in college "sometime in the previous century."
Did You Know: • While touring extensively for their sophomore release, 1999's Utopia Parkway the group, for no particular reason, learned how to say "I am an umbrella" in over a dozen languages.
• They performed together in a series of bands with names such as ‘Are You My Mother?’ and ‘Three Men Who When Standing Side By Side Have A Wingspan Of Over Twelve Feet’. After a brief respite, the duo reconvened in New York City, and got their current name inspired by a lawn ornament store in Wayne, near Schlesinger's hometown.
