ROCK STAR DIARIES
This instrumental band from Delhi was formed in January 2004. The trio comprises a guitarist, bassist and drummer and plays essentially original music, occasionally paying tribute to its influences from genres like jazz and blues rock, and a host of artists including the great Miles Davis and the Dixie Dreggs. The band’s live sets are characterised by improvisation. Says Gaurav, “Bhuvan and I had been playing for four or five years, we then studied sound engineering, and realised we had to keep on playing together. The idea was very simply to just play music and get together. Now being sound engineers, we want to really work on our sound and apply a certain amount of technical knowledge to it as well, work on deeper layers and develop it.”
Being a new band, the focus for them currently, is on playing live as much as possible. Trademark was one of three bands from Delhi invited to play at the World Music Festival in Leh last June. The band considers this one of their best live experiences with everything from the road trip to Leh to the surroundings at the venue creating a great atmosphere in which to play their music. They have around a dozen original compositions ready. Songs like Morse Code and 68 which is a collaboration with Sufi singer Dhananjay Kaul, will soon be available on their as-yet-unnamed website. For now you can check some clips out at rsjonline.com.
Committed to playing original music, the band is constantly fine-tuning what it calls the ‘Trademark Sound’. As for what’s in store in 2005? Says Gaurav, “The idea is to just get on, start recording, playing live, the usual linear path that a band goes on.”
