ROCK STAR DIARIES

Zephyr is the youngest band on our list and their name comes from a word which means ‘a refreshing wind’. Powerhouse vocalist Rachel is just one of the talents that this young band from St. Xavier’s College has in their arsenal. Each band member prides themselves on diverse tastes in music, ranging from trance to western classical to jazz/blues. When they come together as a group, they are committed to making music that falls mainly under the genre of rock. The band believes in the revival of classic rock and metal, their key influences being bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppellin, Iron Maiden, The Doors, Pearl Jam, The Who, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Metallica, Foo Fighters and 3 Doors Down. They are also working on several original compositions, juggling music and studies the best they can.

Their biggest honour yet has been playing live to over 30,000 people at Channel V’s Launch Pad in January. Says JJ, “The day we went for auditions we had no idea how big the event was. We hadn’t practiced because we had our prelims coming up. We thought this was just 15 minutes on stage, we’ll play and hopefully do well. The rest of the bands auditioning were really big. Then we got selected and it was crazy! And playing at the concert was just indescribable!”

At the concert the band also got their first taste of the meaning of the phrase, ‘and the show goes on’. The drums didn’t come on for the first four bars of the song, Samir dropped his guitar in the first bar and then JJ’s drum stick cracked and he played the entire second song with a nearly broken stick! The crowd loved their performance and the band was thrilled to meet and talk to fellow performers Strings and Rabbi who gave them both encouragement and advice. For now, this young band is enjoying their journey, just happy to be playing the music they love.
