ROCK STAR DIARIES

Mumbai-based Zero has a way of making the crowd do exactly what the band wants it to. Whether it’s chanting ‘Standing by Standing by Standing by Standing by’ over and over again (it’s the chorus to their massive song PSP 12”) or jumping up and down to their catchy Not My Kind Of Girl, or just chanting ‘Zero! Zero!’ again and again… this is a band that is in control. To think it all started in August 1998 as a side project, a 'fun' band playing covers of the Eagles, Steely Dan, Pearl Jam and the like. By their third rehearsal they were putting down full band arrangements for original tracks and within seven months had won their first competition, RAIT's Horizons. By the time their first anniversary rolled around, they had played Independence Rock, one of the biggest rock shows in the country, and Zero had arrived.

The band wasted no time putting together a CD of original material. The home-recorded and self released limited edition CD was called Albummed and is still sought after. After playing gigs in Pune, Goa, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and more the band recorded and released an 8 song EP aptly titled Hook. The one thing that is consistent in the band’s music is that every song has a hook and as more people listened to the originals, they no longer wanted Zero to play covers at their live gigs.

2005 has in store for the band a new album and a trip to the UK where they will play their original songs. With classic rock star cool, they say, “We will treat it as just a different set of people who are going to be listening to our music.” We bet they’ll get the Brits to do exactly as the band wants as well.
