Introducing:
In case you’re wondering, there is no exotic story behind this first generation American-born Indian musician’s stage name – Bobby Moon. It’s just an abbreviated version of his real name – Bobby Moonnumhal.
Now that it makes a little more sense you can focus on the important stuff. Like most kids of Indian origin living abroad, Moon’s musical library growing up was a mixture of western and eastern sounds. His debut album The Rising reflects the same featuring a mix of English and Indian tracks brought together by pop and R&B grooves that the young musician spent years working on with US record label Goldman Records.
Diverse is the name of the game across the board and the first single Sundari sees Moon singing in three different languages; English, Hindi, and Malayalam. If you’re still into remixes the album offers up two - O Mere Dil Ke Chen and Mere Sapno Ki Rani.
Highlights:
- In May of 2005, Moon travelled to the land of his cultural roots, explored the music scene and jumped right in to the heart of it all - Bollywood. He penned the title track for the film Jawani Diwani: A Youthful Joyride (starring Emraan Hashmi and Celina Jaitley) making him the first US artist ever to perform the title song in a major Indian film.
About the experience, Moon tells us, “There is no playback singing in the US so it was different for me. Someone singing my song on TV was funny to me. But I was proud to see it. The younger generation is really vibing to this music that we’re making and I feel blessed to be a part of it.”
The Record Q&A:
How has the India experience been?
It’s been great. People have been wonderful, I had no idea how it would be so I’m pleasantly surprised. There’s so much music here all around so it’s exciting.
Do you get compared a lot to artists like Jay Sean and Raghav whose music also blends R&B with Asian sounds?
I think Jay Sean and Raghav are very talented. My music is a little bit of a different style. It’s more hip-hop and R&B but still has beautiful melodies and Indian influences as well – I get to combine the best of both worlds.
