They serenade Marie Antoinette on the big screen, count Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola’s children – Lost In Translation director Sofia and brother Roman - as huge fans, and are label mates with iconic acts like Beth Orton, Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers. Needless to say, these French musicians are doing more than just something right!
They earned major fans with their 2000 debut.
In 2000, these four young musicians from France put out their first album like so many other new acts at the time. The response was overwhelming. They were suddenly the most wanted act in trendy music centres like Paris, London and even L.A., and New York. Acclaimed directors Sofia and Roman Coppola and French electronica giants Air went on record praising the band’s music. Sofia Coppola even used the Phoenix track Too Young on the soundtrack of her Oscar-winning film Lost In Translation.
They began recording their new album without planning a single song beforehand.
For their new album It’s Never Been Like That, the quartet decided to discard the over-planned, stifling approach to music and went the spontaneous route. Having been friends since childhood they knew they were on the same wavelength musically and they could take this risk. They entered the recording process determined to find the sincerity of the first take. ‘Spontaneity’ and ‘rawness’ were the key words for all the songs. “There is a brutality to the record,” says Thomas Mars, Phoenix’s lead singer. “This was about starting all over, making ourselves scared again and telling the truth.” The result is a strikingly fresh sounding, melodic record filled with surprises. As they put it – the album is the result of 2 guitars, 1 bass, drums and a 4-month deadline.
