Jay-Kid - Michael Jackson Matched
The Record brings you yet another exclusive as we catch up with the spectacular 13 year old singing sensation Jay Kid. As he prepares to perform for the first time in India, he talks to us about meeting Michael Jackson, the Neverland ranch, music piracy, and, what he would do if he weren't a hot shot musician.

THE RECORD: You're here in India after having performed in France and Sweden. You're probably going to have traveled the world before you're even 18. Is there any place you really want to go?
Jay Kid: I'd like to see the Taj Mahal, I'd like to see New York again, so many places! I'd like to go everywhere.

TR: What's your favourite song on the album?
JK: My favourite song is I Can't Help It. I've always liked it but it's my favourite on this album because I can sing it like I want to.

TR: You met and performed for Michael Jackson. Tell us about that!
JK: Well, I was invited to Michael Jackson's birthday and I was really….whoa!...I was so happy and excited. And the week before that I'd just sold gold, so I was really feeling on top (of the world). I went over, sang a few numbers and it was really special because I've never imagined that I would perform for Michael Jackson. But I got the chance and I took it! I met Michael afterwards and that was special too.

TR: And you spent some time at Neverland.
JK: When I met him, he said, “Oh you should come to Neverland and just race against each other with the bumper cars”. That was so cool, so I went to Neverland the day after the show. That was just amazing! Imagine when you go there, it's just a desert and then suddenly there's huge green trees, classical music, this big gate, an elephant walking around the park, and there's camels, flamingoes…it's just a magical place.

TR: What was your experience in the studio like?
JK: The first time I went into the studio was around when I was seven. That was a bit special. I did the song in about one and a half hour. I just (snaps his fingers) sang. And it was great. I've been to some big studios as well, and I'm starting to do my own thing as well. I'm a producer as well, I'd like to take some workshops where you can learn some more things.

TR: How long did it take you to learn how to moonwalk?
JK: This moonwalk the side one - took four or five years. And the round one took four five years as well, and the other one (moves his shoulders) took thirteen, almost fourteen years! [Laughs] I'm still learning it.

TR: So are you working on your own moves now?
JK: Yeah! That could be a good idea. I could make my own move! [Laughs]

TR: What other music do you like?
JK: Stevie Wonder, Eric Benet, India Arie, Alicia Keys, Seal, Janet Jackson, Beyonce…there's hundreds!
