No prizes for guessing which member of Aqua was most missed when the band split up. Well have no fear, lead singer Lene Nystrom is back with a new look and new solo album titled Play With Me. The Record gets a super exclusive interview with the pretty Norwegian songstress.
The Record: Tell us something about your new album.
Lene: I started working on my solo album about one and a half years ago. I traveled to New York and LA to figure out who I wanted to work with, and met producers and songwriters to help me out. The last year I've been in the studio working with these people. It's been such a great experience to do something on my own, work with other producers. This album is more edgy lyrically and musically than Aqua. I felt so comfortable because I am older now and this is what I am today and [the music] reflects my personality.
TR: It's Your Duty is a pretty wild song. What inspired that?
Lene: In America they say 'It's your duty to shake that booty girl!' [Laughs] So we took that and made it a girly track to say that you should be proud of yourself. Doesn't matter if you're skinny or fat, be proud of your body and shake that booty and be strong in everything you do in life.
TR: Scream a song which you co-wrote with your husband (ex-Aqua member Soren) is a personal song. Tell us more.
Lene: Scream was the last song to enter the album and it's a very personal track and it's a grungy ballady song and it's about when I had an eating disorder between the ages of 16 and 20. I think it's really important to bring up this issue today because a lot of young girls suffer from bulimia and anorexia. I just wanted to put it into a song and talk about it.
TR: How is it working with Soren now that he is your husband?
Lene: We've been working together for 7 years with aqua and he's doing his own project at the moment. We have such different dreams at the moment, so we try to keep it separate and we like to come home and sit down and talk about what we've been doing. We kinda help each other out but we're not in the same studio together.
TR: Will there be any shades of Aqua in this album?
Lene: Definitely. I think it's still very cheeky and the sense of humour is very high, and I'm not taking myself too seriously. I'm just having a laugh, as I always do. I think that's the main message in my music - to give people energy and a smile!
TR: References to previous Aqua albums are inevitable. How does that make you feel?
Lene: I'm very proud of that. I learned so much with them, I'm so proud of what we did and achieved. I wouldn't have the possibility to stand on my own and release my solo album if it wasn't for Aqua.
