Raghav Sachar
REWIND:
Multi-instrumentalist Raghav Sachar appeared on the music scene three years ago with a debut album that showcased his prodigious talent - he plays 24 instruments!

We won't list all of them here, but note that these range from the familiar - saxophone, guitar, clarinet to the unusual - the didgeridoo, among others.

Between playing on the music of films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Khakee, Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste and Parineeta, and touring live, the 24-year-old worked on his second album. He outlines his plan saying, “I am an extremely serious musician when it comes to my work. I would really appreciate it if people would go out there, buy the album and put some comments on www.raghavsachar.com because their feedback is the thing that will help me make better music.”

THE NEW ALBUM:
On the new album, Raghav Sachar - 24 Carat, the musician not only plays most of the instruments, but even helps put things together in the studio. He says, “I have composed, arranged, engineered, programmed - sometimes done everything right from putting a cable inside the computer to finally recording voices and mixing them.”

The Australia-educated Sachar blends his Indian roots and Western training to create tunes that cover a wide range of genres. “There is a qawalli, hip-hop, R&B, rock… It all depends on what mood I was going through while composing.” The album also features a host of big-name guest vocalists including Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Arnab Chakravarty and Gayatri Iyer. Look out for a jugalbandi with Kailash Kher singing alaaps and Raghav playing the flute.

Quick Question:

Out of the 24 instruments you play do you have a favourite?
“I really enjoy playing the saxophone (both soprano and alto) and the flute and harmonica also. The good part is that the mood you can render over, say a flute, you can’t using a saxophone. So if I am playing in the background score of a movie, on say a sensual scene – I can’t play a flute over that, I have to play the saxophone! If I am making compositions, I know the sound that I want and knowing a vast amount of instruments gives you a vast amount of information about orchestration.

It gives me a lot of options to project myself and render my feelings through different instruments. It’s a God gift. I can emote in 24 different ways.”
